Founded on May 4, 1869, as part of South Orange Township (now Maplewood), the Township of South Orange Village is one of four villages in New Jersey.
South Orange is known for its gaslight street illumination, South Mountain
Reservation, Seton Hall University and much more. Proud of its history, South Orange has many locations on the national and state historic registry. South Orange’s downtown business district is home to many great restaurants, banks, retail and professional services.
With a population of approximately 17,000 in 2.9 square miles, South Orange residents have a median income of approximately $83,000. South Orange’s access to NJ Transit lines and its location only 14 miles from Manhattan, makes it easy for many of South Orange’s residents to commute to work. The village is governed by a Village President and six member Board of Trustees.
